Real places that don’t look real

Storybook villages, misty highlands, northern lights and desert dunes. Ethereal Places finds the places on Earth that look like they were painted rather than built, and writes the honest, practical guides to actually visiting them: when they look like that, what it costs and how to get there.

Explore by what you’re looking for

Country and region guides to the most ethereal corners of Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa, Oceania and the USA.

Magical Landscapes

Enchanted forests, misty mountains, mirror lakes, aurora skies, deserts, caves and flower fields, organised by feeling.

Fairytale Places

Storybook villages, castles, ruins, sacred sites and the real filming locations behind the worlds you grew up with.

Seasonal Travel

Where to go right now and where to plan for next season, published early enough that you can still book the good stays.

This season

Winter is building. The next three months are about Christmas markets and festive villages, snowy places that are better in the cold and northern lights season, which runs until March. If you are planning further ahead, cherry blossom and tulip season book up in January.

Who writes this

Ethereal Places is written and edited by Ayesha, its founder. She started the site after one too many evenings trying to work out whether a dreamlike photo was a real place, a composite, or somewhere that only looks like that for three weeks in late October. The answer was usually “real, but you need to know when to go”, and that is the gap every guide here fills.

How we work

  • Every guide is built from primary sources first: tourism boards, park authorities, transport operators and the venues themselves.
  • Prices, hours and seasonal closures are checked at the time of writing, and every article shows its last-updated date.
  • When we haven’t been somewhere ourselves, we say so.
  • Some links are affiliate links. They never decide what we recommend. Full disclosure.
  • Spotted an error? Send a correction and we will fix it.
