Some places look like they were painted rather than built. A village mirrored in a still Alpine lake. A forest where the fog never quite lifts. A monastery balanced on a column of rock. The aurora over a frozen fjord. They turn up on your feed, you save them, and then the hard questions start: where exactly is that, when does it look like that, and can an ordinary person actually get there?
Ethereal Places answers those questions. We find the real places on Earth that look like they belong in a fantasy novel, and we write the honest, practical guides that turn a saved image into a trip you can take.
What you will find here
- Destinations: country and region guides to the most ethereal corners of Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and the Middle East, Oceania and the United States.
- Magical Landscapes: the places organised by feeling rather than by map, from enchanted forests and misty mountains to northern lights, deserts, caves and flower fields.
- Fairytale Places: storybook villages, castles, ruins, sacred sites and the real filming locations behind the worlds you grew up with.
- Seasonal Travel: where to go right now and where to plan for next season, published early enough that you can still book the good stays.
- Plan Your Trip: itineraries, where to stay, budgets and advice written for how you actually travel, whether that is solo, as a couple, with kids, with your best friends or at a slower pace.
How we choose places
Beautiful is not enough. For a place to appear on this site it has to be real, reachable and worth the effort, and we have to be able to tell you something useful about visiting it. Every guide is researched from primary sources first: tourism boards, park authorities, transport operators and the venues themselves. We record the date each article was checked and we update guides when prices, seasons or access change. When we have not been somewhere ourselves, we say so. Our Editorial Policy explains the whole process, including how to send us a correction.
Who is behind it
Ethereal Places is written and edited by Ayesha, its founder. She started the site after one too many evenings spent trying to work out whether a dreamlike photo was a real place, a composite, or a place that only looks like that for three weeks in late October. The answer, it turned out, was usually “real, but you need to know when to go”, and that is the gap this site fills.
How the site is funded
Ethereal Places is reader-supported. Some links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission if you book or buy through them, at no extra cost to you. We may also display advertising. Neither affects which places we recommend or how we describe them. Our Disclaimer has the full details.
